It is very important to understand which poker hands are the strongest when playing poker online. Not knowing whether, say a 'straight flush' beats 'four of a kind' could leave you out of pocket in a big way. Betastic has compiled a list of poker hand ranks, starting with the highest and working down. This is the norm, however some poker web sites may vary slightly. Its always a good idea to check before playing.
Royal Flush
This is the highest ranked hand you can achieve. Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10 of the same suit is required.

Five cards in a sequence, all of a matching suit.

Four cards of the same rank, but of different suits. The fifth card is known as the 'kicker', in community card games if a draw is called the highest ranking kicker will win.

This consists of three cards of the same rank (three of a kind) and two separate cards of the same rank (pair). In community card games if a draw is called the highest ranking pair determines the winner.

This is made up of five cards of the same suit, not in any particular sequence.

A straight is five cards of any suit in a sequence. The ace can be either the high or the low in the hand.

Three cards of the same rank and two non matching cards. In the event of a tie in community card games the two non matching cards rank will determine the winner.

Two sets of two matching card ranks. In the event of a draw with the highest ranking pair wins.

One set of two matching card ranks. In the event of a draw the highest ranking pair wins.

Five unrelated cards in a hand. In the event of a draw the rank of the cards from high to low will determine the winner. All five cards may have to be considered.

Prepared with this knowledge you will be in a better position to play online poker. The trick is to work out how you can achieve the hands at the top of this page more often.
