US Open 2015: Betting odds have McIlroy, Speith and Mickleson favourites

US Open 2015 logoJust two months after his first major victory, 21-year-old Jordan Spieth joins Rory McIlroy as the bookmaker’s favourites to win the 115th U.S. Open, which starts Thursday at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Washington.

McIlroy is best-priced at 8/1 with Paddy Power, and the 21-year-old Spieth is not far behind him at 9/1 with Betfred. Then the field spreads out a bit, with Mickelson third favourite at 16/1 with various bookmakers and British hopeful Justin Rose at 18/1.

Spieth, who recorded a record breaking 18 under win at Augusta earlier this year, has not won a tournament since, but tops the money earned this year by a stretch.

The games new young star appears confident ahead of the open, even considering a potential Grand Slam.

"You can't win a Grand Slam unless you win the first," Spieth told Fox Sports. "So I'm the only one with that opportunity this year. I'm going to go ahead and focus on this week and see if I can put myself in contention."

But Spieth does face formidable competition including several previous U.S Open winners, such as Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy. The 26-year-old won the tournament back in 2011 and is keen to record his next major win.

Unlike Spieth, McIlroy has won two tournaments since The Masters, and finished eighth at The Players Championship last month. A tournament that Spieth failed to make the cut in.

Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson pose the biggest threat to the two favourites and the American pair will favour playing on home soil. Mickelson has yet to add the U.S. Open to his bulging trophy cabinet, but has claimed victory at all the other majors during his career.

An article on the U.S. Open would probably feel a little bare without a mention for the three-time U.S. Open champ Tiger Woods. He finds himself at slightly longer odds than the favourites at 70/1 with several bookmakers. His last major was the U.S. back in 2008 after a playoff with Rocco Mediate.
