US FlagA need for tighter controls on Sports Betting in the US has been raised in a publication by Congress representative Jim McDermott. In the paper titled “All Bets Are Not Off on Super Bowl Sunday”, McDermott estimates that 99% of bets by US citizens on the Superbowl will be placed illegally through an unlicenced bookmaker or at an online gambling website.

McDermott and Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank have campaigned for the legalization of internet gambling in a controlled and regulated form. They have both argue that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act UIGEA, brought in to outlaw internet gambling has not worked, with many offshore gambling sites finding loop holes to still take bets.

A Joint Committee on Taxation analysis found that the U.S. could receive up to $41 billion in federal revenue over the next decade if Internet gambling is regulated as proposed.
