|Rooney’s Father Cleared over Betting Allegations|
The father of England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney was cleared of any wrong doing this week after allegations he was involved in an illegal betting ring.
Wayne Rooney Snr was caught up in a number of claims regarding alleged betting irregularities. Rooney Snr, along with eight other men, was arrested last October on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud over bets placed on a game between Motherwell and Hearts back in 2010.
Motherwell player and long time family friend of Wayne Rooney, Steve Jennings was also arrested as part of the investigation but was also cleared earlier this week.
Solicitor for Rooney Snr, Anthony Barnfather, stated "Mr Rooney Sr has always vigorously denied the allegations and maintained his innocence throughout the investigation. He is delighted the matter has now concluded.”
Concerns were raised about the Motherwell versus Hearts game, on Tuesday 14th December 2010, by the Association of British Bookmakers after a large quantity of bets from the Liverpool area were put down on there being a sending off during the game.
The link between Steve Jennings and Rooney’s family along with other suspects in the Liverpool area caused suspicion that something untoward had been arranged to fix the event of a sending off.
However, the investigation has since found no sufficient evidence to find any of the arrested parties guilty.
