| Ex-Liverpool Star Dietmar Hamann Reveals He Lost £288k on Single Bet |
Former Liverpool midfielder and Champions League winner Dietmar Hamann revealed this week how he once lost £288,400 on a single bet.The shocking news is confirmed in Hamann’s autobiography, titled ‘The Didi Man’, where he admits to using spread betting as a way to cope with negativity in his personal life. He suffered the huge loss on a bet that he made a cricket match involving Australia and South Africa.
"I was spread betting because it requires more thought, and the more my brain was engaged the less I thought about the devastation I was feeling inside,” Hamann admits.
Hamann, who also enjoyed spells at Manchester City and Newcastle during his time in English football, recently parted company with Stockport County as manager after investment he was promised failed to materialise.
He still remembers that single bet loss well and said "That night I bought Australia for £2,800 at 340 runs. That meant for every run over 340 you win £2,800, but for every run under you lose the same amount. Australia collapsed for 237. It is a score I remember well. It cost me £288,400. Every wicket felt like a stab in the heart. By the end of the night I felt like I'd been scalped.”
However, Hamann confesses he immediately wanted to tackle the issue after waking up the following morning and realising that “things have got to change”.
This latest revelation is not the first time Hamann has been involved with controversy. On 12th July, 2009, he was stopped by police at junction 6 of the M56 near Chester on suspicion of drink driving. On 23rd February, 2010, he was found guilty and given a 16 month driving ban with a £2,000 fine.
