| The European Championship finals 2008, Group D betting guide |
Group D is likely to deliver some big surprises with Spain, Greece, Sweden and Russia battling it out for the top two spots in the qualifying stages. With the current European Cup holders in the group and emerging European hopefuls Russia, this group is hard to pick.
Spain are the bookmakers favourites to win Group D given their line up of international stars and an impressive record of making it past the group stages in big tournaments. Spain has bags of quality up front in Fernando Torres and David Villa. This is backed up by talisman Cesc Fabregas in midfield, making them a good bet to qualify for the Quarter Finals. Although Spain tend to “flatter to deceive” in the later stages, their current squad makes them genuine contenders for Euro 2008 glory. There is no obvious team to take the second qualifying place, as all three teams have extremely talented sides of their own. Russia were the first ever European Cup winners back in 1960 and under inspirational coach, Guus Hiddink they pose a major threat in Group D. Zenit St Petersburg comfortably won the Uefa Cup to confirm just how vastly improved Russian football become in recent years.
Sweden has bags of experience in players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who have dazzled at previous tournaments, although he is one of only a few real stars in this Scandinavian outfit. Then there’s Greece, 250/1 rank outsiders to win in 2004 and they came through to beat Portugal 1-0 in the final.
With Spain looking good to take the Group, it is hard to pick a second placed team. Many believe that there is not much to separate the other three and we would have to agree. On current form Russia possibly have a very slight edge on the others, but it’s very close.
