Oscar trophy imageThe Screen Actors Guild Awards had a massive impact on the Oscar odds this week after several actors triumphed whilst others, including George Clooney and Meryl Streep, missed out.

Clooney and Streep have long been fancied as the hot favourites for the best actor and best actress in a leading role awards at the Oscars for their roles in The Descendants and The Iron Lady respectively but the recent SAG Awards has tipped the Oscar odds on its head.

The Help was the big winner at the SAG Awards with the film taking home best ensemble cast and Viola Davis winning the best actress award. Jean Dujardin won best actor for his role in The Artist.

In light of its success at the SAG Awards, The Help has now dropped from 33/1 to 25/1 with William Hill to win the best picture award at the Oscars in February but The Artist remains the firm favourite with the bookmakers at 1/6.

The best actress award at the Oscars is now a two horse race after Davis’s success at the SAG Awards. She has dropped from 7/2 to 6/5 to pip Streep to the award who is still the slight favourite at 4/6. Their nearest rival is Michelle Williams at 6/1 for her lead role in My Week with Marilyn.

Clooney is also fast loosing his tag as the favourite for the best actor at the Oscars. He is now 4/9 with William Hill to win the award but Dujardin has fallen from 2/1 to 7/4 to follow up his SAG Award with an Oscar win.

William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly stated “The Screen Actors Guild Awards are all about the actors and while Meryl Streep and George Clooney should be worried that their challengers received the gongs, The Artist looks like it still has the edge over its competitors ahead of the big one."
