| Betting Probe into BDO World Darts Championship Match |
A betting probe has been launched after suspicious betting patterns were discovered in the World Darts Championship match between Davey “The Badger” Prins and Dutch opponent Willy van der Wiel. The match took place at the Lakeside Country Club in Surrey last week and resulted in a 3-0 win for van der Wiel. Suspicion was aroused after large bets were being placed on a 3-0 score line in the Dutchman’s favour which prompted bookmakers to notify the British Darts Organisation (BDO) of the irregularities.
The BDO has advised its lawyers to aid the Gambling Commission with the investigation that is set to take place to find out more about the reasons for these large bets on a single correct outcome.
A spokesman for the BDO stated “The BDO has been advised that there are betting patterns relating to the above match that may warrant further investigation. The BDO takes its responsibility to protect the integrity of the great sport of darts very seriously.”
The spokesman went on to confirm that after being made aware of the irregular betting patterns on the match that it would be seeking to find answers and would be launching an investigation.
“As part of the investigation, information will be gathered from all pertinent parties, including the players themselves, the match officials, the bookmakers, and others, in order to determine, based on the available evidence, whether or not there is a case to answer for breach of the BDO’s rules.” He said.
Bookmakers have refused to pay out on the winning bets until the investigation is finished. William Hill said it was holding back paying out on the result after noting irregular betting patterns.
A spokesperson for William Hill said “In this instance we couldn’t see any logical reason that would explain the betting pattern we were seeing so we closed our book on that particular game and reported it to the Gambling Commission as we are obliged to do.”
